Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips, trips, and falls are common workplace hazards that can result from losing balance due to a slip, tripping over improperly placed objects, or falling from elevated positions. Here are some strategies to minimize these risks in your work area.

Housekeeping
  • Remove all trash, scrap materials, and unused items.
  • Keep aisles, exits, and stairs free from obstructions such as materials, pallets, tools, and fixtures.
  • Prioritize regular housekeeping to prevent the buildup of trash or materials.
Maintenance
  • Repair any holes, cracks, or uneven surfaces that could pose a trip hazard.
  • Use slip-resistant floor coverings in areas prone to slips and place floor mats at entry doors to completely wipe shoes.
  • Use "Caution Wet Floor" signs when working in areas with wet floors to alert others to the hazard.
Stairs
  • Use handrails to protect yourself in case of a fall. If carrying a load that impairs stair use, use the elevator or seek help.
  • Keep stairways in good repair and well-lit.
  • Never run on stairs.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
  • Beware of tripping hazards. Do not leave extension cords, tools, carts, or other items in walkways. Address or report these issues.
  • Watch for slip hazards such as water, grease, oil, food, sawdust, or debris. Even small amounts can cause falls.
  • Walk only in designated walkways; avoid shortcuts through non-walkway areas.
Shoes
  • Wear work shoes with non-skid soles and rubber heels.
  • Thoroughly clean your shoes when entering a building in rainy or snowy weather.
Preventing Falls from Heights
  • Always use three points of contact when climbing ladders, scaffolds, or other equipment. Avoid overreaching.
  • Never jump from work platforms, loading docks, trucks, or other equipment.
