How do I transfer to a Historically Black College or University (HBCU)?
Transferring to an HBCU is a similar process of applying and transferring to any other college or university.
- Choose the specific bachelor degree program you wish to pursue.
Choosing a specific degree program allows you to plan accordingly to maximize transfer equivalencies and requirements. Take charge of your academic path and spend time self-reflecting.- What do you want to study?
- What job opportunities are you looking for?
- What profession or field are you trying to enter? Is this profession or field growing?
- Every student has different educational interests. Make sure you pick a degree program that fits you and your goals.
- Research, explore, and select the HBCUs that you're interested in applying to.
- Consider visiting their campus in person or take a virtual tour, if available. Research what resources the HBCU offers. Do they offer career and employment guidance? What other services do they offer? Do their services meet your needs?
- Ask yourself what sort of campus experience you prefer. For instance, do you prefer a campus in a large city with a lot activity? Or do you prefer a smaller campus or online setting?
- Schedule an appointment with a Transfer Specialist by completing a Transfer Success Form through the Transfer Center to receive guidance and to discuss your transfer pathway.
- Planning the next several semesters in advance is very important and will minimize the chance of credit loss.
- Complete the application process on the HBCU's website and include all required materials
for admission. Typically application materials include but are not limited to:
- Your college transcripts. To access your unofficial LCC transcript log into Self Service Banner, click on student, click on student records, click on unofficial academic transcript.
- To access your official transcripts please visit LCC's Requesting Official Transcripts page.
- FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
- Letters, essays, or any other reference material

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an HBCU?
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education established primarily to serve the African American community before the Civil Rights Movement, when other colleges often excluded Black students. Today, HBCUs are diverse, inclusive, and open to students of all backgrounds. They provide a rich cultural experience, strong academics, and a supportive community. HBCUs are also known for producing leaders in various industries and fostering excellence in education, arts, science, and more.
How do I know if an HBCU is right for me?
An HBCU may be a great fit if you’re looking for:
- A sense of community and belonging in a culturally rich and supportive environment.
- Opportunities to connect with professors and mentors who prioritize your success.
- Access to a network of alumni who are leaders in their fields.
- A curriculum and campus experience that celebrates Black culture, history, and excellence.
Visiting an HBCU campus, attending events like our HBCU Experience panel, or speaking with current students and alumni can help you decide if an HBCU aligns with your academic and personal goals.
Do all my credits transfer to HBCUs?
Many HBCUs have transfer agreements with community colleges like LCC, making it easier for your credits to transfer. To ensure a smooth transition:
- Work with an LCC transfer advisor to select courses that align with your intended major.
- Review transfer policies and articulation agreements for specific HBCUs.
- Check directly with the HBCU’s admissions or transfer office to confirm how your credits will be applied.
