Michigan Community College Guarantee FAQ
Which Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) do I need to file?
File FAFSA at studentaid.gov
Students must file a FAFSA for each academic year. The academic year begins with fall semester and ends with summer semester.
- For fall 2024 through summer 2025 classes, file the 2024-2025 FAFSA
- For fall 2025 through summer 2026 classes, file the 2025-2026 FAFSA
How many credits do I have to take to be eligible?
You must be a full-time student to use the Michigan Community College Guarantee. At LCC, full-time is defined as 12 credits or more per semester.
Does family income matter for eligibility for the Guarantee?
No. All students who graduate from a Michigan high school in the class of 2023 or later are eligible, regardless of family income.
Can I receive the Michigan Community College Guarantee and other financial aid in the same semester?
The Michigan Community College Guarantee is a last-dollar scholarship, which means the Federal Pell Grant and tuition-restricted scholarships or awards must be applied before Guarantee funding.
Check packaging examples under the "What costs are covered?" section of this page.
Will course and lab fees be covered by the Michigan Community College Guarantee?
Yes. The Guarantee covers the cost of the student support fee, registration fee and course fees.
I do not live in the LCC district, and instead pay in-state tuition. Will the Michigan Community College Guarantee still pay for my tuition?
In-state students can receive up to the in-district tuition rate, student support fee, registration fee and course fees from the Michigan Community College Guarantee. You will need to pay for the difference between in-district and in-state tuition yourself or through other scholarships or aid. Find information about residency and how to check or update your residency status on the residency page.
Can my federal Pell grant or other scholarships or grants cover the out-of-district (in-state) portion of my cost?
Yes.
Do I need to sign up for an LCC payment plan?
If you do not have enough financial aid – including from the Michigan Community College Guarantee – to cover your balance, you will be required to sign up for a payment plan or pay in full.
Does the Michigan Community College Guarantee pay for remedial or developmental education courses?
Yes.
Can I change my major, also known as my program of study?
Yes. The Community College Guarantee does not require that all courses are part of your declared program of study. You must be enrolled full time, and at least some of your credits must count toward a declared program, but you can change your major.
Can I drop a class after the semester begins?
If you drop a course during the 100% or 50% tuition refund period but still maintain full-time enrollment, your Community College Guarantee funds will simply be adjusted in your account. If you drop below full-time enrollment, however, the Community College Guarantee funds will be removed in full and you will need to enroll in a payment plan or pay in full for your remaining classes.
If I am in default on a federal loan, can I receive the Michigan Community College Guarantee?
No.
How long can I receive the Michigan Community College Guarantee?
For up to three years. You may be eligible to receive the Michigan Achievement Scholarship for up to five consecutive years total, but no more than three of those years can be at a community college.
Do I need to maintain a certain GPA to continue to receive the Michigan Community College Guarantee?
You must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) to continue receiving the Guarantee.
What is my residency status (in-district vs. in-state)?
Find information about residency and how to check or update your residency status on the residency page.
