Each January Lansing Community College provides IRS Tax Form 1098T to qualified students. Please keep in mind that LCC cannot give tax advice, and any information obtained on our website or from our office must not be construed as tax advice.
Important notice: Effective January 1, 2018, tax law requires all educational institutions to report payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) in Box 1 of the Form 1098T.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
The Privacy Act Notice, Section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code, REQUIRES students to give their Social Security Number (SSN) to those who must file specific information with the IRS about them. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure their records are up to date and as accurate as possible. If your social security number is incomplete or missing from your student account with Lansing Community College, your 1098T statement will generate; however it will not match with the IRS. If you are not eligible to have a social security number, your taxpayer identification number is sufficient.
If there is an error in the student’s records, contact the registrar’s office. Be sure to have all necessary documentation and proper identification when attempting to update your information. A valid ID and your Social Security card must be presented in order for a student’s SSN to be changed. It is important to note, failure to furnish a correct SSN subjects the student to a penalty of $50 by the IRS, if due to willful neglect.
Please note: LCC will use your SSN for the purpose of preparing the 1098T tuition statement. All other documentation printed by the college will use your student ID number. Students that do not wish to provide LCC with a social security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) will need to complete the Opt-Out form and return it to the StarZone or Mail the form:

AVAILABILITY AND SCHEDULE
LCC will furnish 1098T statements on January 31 of every year. Students can opt in to access their 1098T statement electronically by signing in to myLCC and select “Student Finance/TouchNet.” The online consent is under My Account in TouchNet.

What is Form 1098T?
In accordance with the Tax Relief Act of 1997 and IRS regulations, LCC provides eligible students with Form 1098T. This statement shows qualified tuition and fees that were billed between January 1 and December 31 of a given tax year as well as financial aid paid between those dates. Using this information, you can determine if you qualify to receive a tax deduction based on what was paid out-of-pocket.

What information is provided on the 1098T statement?
Beginning tax year 2018, colleges and universities are required by the IRS to report the amounts paid for qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE)-Box 1.
Therefore, Box 2 will be blank. Box 5 - Scholarships and Grants, includes any scholarships and grants applied to the student's account for the calendar year. Box 4 provides adjustments to the qualified tuition reported in the prior year. Box 6 provides adjustments to scholarships and grants reported in a prior year.

How do I update my SSN on my Student Account?
Students can provide a valid picture ID and their SSN card in the StarZone or mail in a completed and signed IRS W-9S form to Student Finance in order to update your Student Account.

Why did I not receive a 1098T?
IRS regulations, we are only required to send out 1098-T forms to students who had “eligible educational expenses” that were greater than their financial assistance for the calendar year (January 1 to December 31) in question.
What do the boxes mean on the 1098T?
Box 1: Payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses. The amount might be different than the amount you actually paid and are deemed to have paid.
Box 2: Due to an IRS change in reporting, LCC will no longer be reporting information in this box.
Box 3: This box is reserved for future use.
Box 4: Contains any billing adjustments in qualified tuition and related expenses that were made during the calendar year for a prior calendar year.
Box 5: Contains the total amount of all scholarships/grants and fellowship stipends received during the calendar year.
Box 6: Contains any scholarship/grant adjustments that were made during the calendar year for a prior calendar year.
Box 7: Is checked if the amount reported in Box 1 includes amounts for an academic period beginning January – March 2023.
Box 8: Is checked if the student was enrolled in 6 or more credit hours in the fall semester, spring semester, or summer semester.
Box 9: Is checked if the student was a graduate student. LCC doesn’t offer graduate level courses, therefore this box is blank.
Box 10: LCC doesn’t report information in box 10.
