What They Do: A degree in Kinesiology will prepare students to enter a variety of fields associated with sports, exercise science, rehabilitation, education and/or motor development.

Who Would Enjoy It: Outgoing, people-oriented individuals interested in exercise science, health/injury prevention, wellness, and athletics, would enjoy working in this field.  Working environments typically include gyms, fitness facilities, athletic facilities, rehabilitation clinics or hospital settings.

Employment Prospects: Many of the areas of Kinesiology have seen substantial growth in employment opportunities, particularly in the health/wellness, sport performance and rehabilitation fields.

Kinesiology - The Science That Moves You

Kinesiology is the study of human movement. Students who graduate with an Associate's degree in Kinesiology will be able to work in entry level positions in fitness leadership, wellness promotion, corporate wellness, etc., or transfer to a four-year institution in the field of Kinesiology. Students who continue on to complete an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology may choose careers in the corporate or clinical settings. Additionally, students have the option of continuing their education to receive an advanced degree in a variety of kinesiology related fields, such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician's Assistant, Athletic Training, Pre-Med, etc.

A Group Fitness Instructor is a professional in the field of fitness and group exercise. These instructors lead a group of individuals in activities such as circuit training, core strength, high intensity training, aerobics, or a variety of other group exercises. Fitness topics may also include nutrition, weight-loss, and self-help.

A Personal Trainer is a professional that works one on one with individuals to guide, motivate, and create fitness plans in order to meet the goals of their client.  Trainers work with clients on goal setting, behavior modification, weight lifting form & mechanics, and cardiovascular training.

To become a successful fitness leader, an individual needs to be knowledgeable in exercise science and aware of current and future trends in the profession.

LCC's Kinesiology curriculum will get you ready for the fitness industry in as quick as 2 semesters! LCC's Kinesiology curriculum also prepares students to transfer a university Kinesiology program, where you can learn more specialized concepts/skills that will prepare you for the workforce and/or prepare you for many advanced degree programs related to Kinesiology (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Medical Doctor, etc.). The curriculum consists of:

  • Group Fitness Instructor, Certificate of Completion
  • Personal Trainer, Certificate of Achievement
  • Kinesiology, Associates Degree in Applied Science

Curriculum Information

Persons who provide exercise training must have a thorough foundation in the body systems response to exercise in order to provide proper nutrition education and exercise training in preventive and therapeutic applications. Exercise physiology classes are included in the curriculum as well as General Education - Transfer Degrees (MTA) classes.

After successful completion of this certificate individuals are prepared to take a Group Fitness Certification or Personal Trainer Certification Exam by a National Commission or Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accrediting organization, such as American Council on Exercise® (ACE), American College of Sports Medicine® (ACSM), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), or National Strength and Conditioning Association (NCSA). Once the Group Fitness or Personal Trainer certification is obtained, individuals are prepared for jobs as a Personal Trainer and are eligible to take the Level 1 Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) credential exam through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
