Overview
Elementary school teachers work with children ages 5 to 13. Most are assigned to one grade level, K-6, with a classroom of about 20-25 children. They teach a broad range of subjects such as reading, math, geography, and science.
Secondary School Teachers work with students age 14-18. They teach classes within a designated discipline such as math, English and science.

Overview
This degree is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in education, either through employment as a teacher paraprofessional or a preschool teacher/administrator in a daycare setting, or through transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Education leading to teacher certification in the state of Michigan. This Career Community includes the following pathways: Child Development and Early Education, Education, and Teacher Paraprofessional. This degree includes a set of courses common to all majors under this umbrella and to the majority of transfer institutions. Students beginning college in this degree program are encouraged to work with academic and program advisors throughout their first few semesters of study to determine their specific major area and transfer institution (if transfer is a goal).

Teacher Paraprofessional, AAS
Overview
Teacher Paraprofessionals work under the direction of a classroom teacher in settings ranging from early childhood through elementary, middle school and high school. This curriculum meets federal requirements for teacher parapros.
Some of the duties of the teacher parapro include working with small groups of children on their reading, math, and writing development; collecting and recording data on student performance; using technology for instructional purposes; and carrying out the instructional objectives of the classroom teacher. In addition, the teacher parapro must be able to communicate effectively with parents, students, and teachers; implement behavior management techniques; and recognize a range of special needs.

Teacher Paraprofessional, CC
Overview
The certificate offers a foundation in educational concepts and a practical introduction to classroom management and content-area instruction. It is intended for students who may have already met federal requirements for teacher paraprofessionals by completing 60 college credits or an associate degree in a field other than education. Courses in this certificate may also be applied toward an associate degree or transfer program leading to teacher certification.
A criminal background check is required for employment in this field.
