How do I register to vote?
To vote in Michigan, you must be:

  • A Michigan resident (at the time you register) and a resident of your city or township for at least 30 days (when you vote)
  • A U.S. citizen
  • At least 18 years of age (by election day)
  • Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison

Also, you must be registered to vote … but how does that happen?

  1. Register online! Michigan allows all residents of voting age with a state-issued ID to register online.
  2. Register in person or by mail. If you do not have a state-issued ID, have trouble with digital forms or cannot register to vote online for any reason, you can register to vote in person or by mail.
  3. Register to vote on campus. The City Clerk will hold a Voter Registration Drive from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 16-19 at LCC's Arts & Sciences Building, on Downtown Campus.

Did you know?

  • Michigan does not restrict voting rights based on past criminal offenses, felony or misdemeanor. All Michigan residents who have been convicted of a crime automatically regain their right to vote upon their release from custody; however, if this applies to you, you should still re-register using the steps listed above.
  • You will be asked to show ID when you check in to vote. If you don’t have one, you can still vote. If this happens, expect a poll worker to ask you to sign a form before you vote that explains you didn’t have an ID. Your ballot will be included with all others and counted.
All registered Michigan voters are entitled to vote by mail. Learn more from the Secretary of State.
