Celebrating Dr. King’s legacy

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for love, equality, and justice—for all people, regardless of their skin color, religion, or any other difference. He faced fear and opposition head-on, always standing firm in his belief that every human being has value and deserves dignity and respect. His dream was that everyone, no matter their circumstances, would have the opportunity to access education, employment, and resources that would allow them to live with dignity. He dedicated his life—and ultimately gave his life—for that dream.

At the Martin Luther King Jr. Equity Center in the Office of Empowerment at Lansing Community College, we celebrate, honor and carry on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. not just on Martin Luther King Jr Day”, but every day. We do this by listening to your needs and doing all we can to ensure you have what you need to succeed.  We believe that YOU deserve respect, to be acknowledged for who you are, and to be equipped for the future.

How you help carry on the legacy

Dr. King emphasized the power of listening and collective action in making positive change. It’s through your feedback and active participation that we can ensure we’re moving forward together. You are unique, your voice is important, and we want to hear from you.

That’s why we’ve organized events like our Let’s Talk – Voices Unveiled series where we provide spaces and facilitate discussions that bring students, staff and faculty together to engage in meaningful dialogues about equity and inclusion, and to address challenges and share solutions -- embodying Dr. King’s emphasis on collective action.

We’re always ready to receive your emails, telephone calls, or suggestions, and we invite you to join in on these important conversations.  In addition, we collaborate with other departments and teams across campus to actively remove barriers and develop actionable strategies that pave the way to success for you -- our students, our staff, our faculty, and our community—aligning with Dr. King’s vision of justice and respect for everyone.

We celebrate You

We’ll continue to create programs that celebrate diversity through our Cultural Awareness 365 Committees, which are aimed at helping build relationships, unity, understanding and a sense of belonging for everyone on our campus.

We also support student-led cultural celebrations and programs through collaboration with the Cesar Chavez Multicultural Center. This promotion of open dialogue and understanding among students, staff, and faculty, reflects Dr. King’s principles of collaboration and respect for all.

We’re committed to your education

Dr. King also believed in the power of education to create lasting change, and we share that belief. We’re committed to ensuring that students have the resources, mentorship, and support they need to thrive academically and professionally. We partner with the Maya Angelou Training Center by recommending and supporting equity-focused training and student programs to empower students to embrace diversity and inclusion.

We’re breaking down silos

In addition to everything we’re doing on our campuses, we’re also hosting events with community and global advisors to gather input and foster collaboration. By engaging with a wide range of perspectives, we can make sure our equity efforts are truly reflective of the diverse world we live in, integrated into the broader community and not confined to a single perspective or institution.

Together, we can continue to carry forward Dr. King’s legacy of love, justice, and respect for all. Together, we can create real, actionable change and we invite you to share your thoughts.

Will you join us on this journey?
