Credit for Experiential Learning, BP 3.100

1. Purpose

To identify, review, and, if appropriate, approve credit for students for previously acquired knowledge, skills, and/or experiences.

2. Scope

Applies to current students requesting credit for previously acquired knowledge, skills, and experiences, and the academic departments/faculty and personnel processing requests for credit.

3. Prerequisites

Students must be admitted to Lansing Community College (LCC).

Guidelines:

  • Experiential learning must be directly related to a specific course or courses required within the student’s declared program of study. Developmental coursework is excluded from consideration.

  • A non-refundable $150 processing fee must be submitted. Fees are subject to change.

  • Credit will be posted for the semester in which credit was approved.

  • The decision of LCC to award credit for experiential learning does not obligate any other institution to accept such credits in transfer.

  • Credits received by students that are based on experiential learning may not be used for financial aid or veteran’s benefits eligibility.

  • Appropriate credit for Experiential Learning is applicable toward LCC General Education requirements for all degrees, including degrees that otherwise would require completion of the full Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA). However, due to statewide rules, credit for experiential learning is not applicable to the MTA endorsement at this time.

  • LCC does not accept the transfer of credit for Experiential Learning awarded at other institutions.

  • Credits awarded through any of the Prior Learning applications/exams will be applied to the students record as transfer credit.

  • Regardless of the number of credits transferred in, Lansing Community College (LCC) awards require that the following be earned directly from LCC (except for approved consortial programs taught primarily by partner schools):

    • Associate Degrees – at least 15 semester credits toward the program of study;
    • Certificates of Achievement – at least 7.5 semester credits toward the program of study;
    • Certificates of Completion – at least 25% of the semester credits toward the program of study.

4. Responsibilities

  • Student – Responsible for initiating meetings with program advisor and submitting appropriate application, application fee, and documentation.

  • Registrar’s Office – Responsible for granting approved credits.

  • Academic Division/Departments/Faculty – Responsible for approving or denying credit equivalencies from experiential learning.

  • Experiential Learning Coordinator (ELC) – Reviews with students their potential prior learning credits and, if appropriate, helps them through the application process.

  • Divisional Contact - Responsible for communicating with program faculty, administration, and the ELC.

5. Procedure

  1. The student should meet with an advisor in the program for which credit is being sought.

  2. The student must meet with the ELC to discuss the student’s experiences to determine which, if any, method of prior learning credit is the most appropriate.

  3. If appropriate, the ELC will support the student in their completion of the Experiential Learning Credit Application.

  4. The student will submit the Experiential Learning Credit Application. A non-refundable $150 processing fee must be submitted with the application.

  5. The ELC will review the application and, if complete, will assign the application to the appropriate Divisional Contact.

    1. If the application is insufficient, the ELC will contact the student via the LCC student email for additional information.

  6. After receiving the application and supporting documents, the Academic Division determines what credit, if any, can be granted to the student.

    1. If credit is being sought from more than one division, the process may require additional time.

    2. If the student’s application is received during the summer semesters, the process may require additional time due to limited faculty availability.

    3. If credit is denied, or if a student feels the evaluation was incorrect, they may file a written appeal to the Dean of the Division from which the credit is being sought. Appeals must be received within 3 months from the date of the decision. The decision of the Dean shall be final.

  7. Credit approved by the Divisional Dean will be forwarded to the Divisional Contact.

  8. The Divisional Contact will forward the approved credit to the Registrar’s Office.

  9. The Registrar’s Office will grant the approved credit to the student’s academic record.

  10. The Registrar’s Office will notify the student via LCC student email once the credit is granted.
