Programs of study include:
Academic First-Year Experience
First Year College Experience introduces students to college and the skills they will need for success in college. Students will learn and apply strategies for adjusting to college and improving class performance. Topics include academic and self-management issues, such as campus resources, study techniques, diversity, communication, critical thinking and problem solving, career planning, time management, goal-setting, finances and stress-management.

English for Speakers of Other Languages
English for Speakers of Other Language classes, offered through the English Department, are designed for students who grew up speaking a language other than English as their primary language. These classes prepare students for academic success at LCC and beyond.
ESOL Classes in the English Department
- ESOL 098 - ESL Combined Skills Level 4

Prepares non-native speakers of English for success in college courses. A theme-based approach helps learners develop reading, writing, academic vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills. Emphasis on technology skills for academic work including word processing, MLA/APA format, D2L dropbox and discussion boards. Students should meet with an academic advisor to determine which concurrent enrollment options to select.

- ESOL 099 - ESL Combined Skills Level 5

Advanced-level non-native speakers of English will develop reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills for academic success. Students will use college-level texts to develop reading, writing, and critical skills. Emphasis on technology skills for academic work. Students should meet with an academic advisor to determine which concurrent enrollment options to select. Reading Level 5 and Writing Level 6 are granted upon successful completion (exit competency 2.5).

- NCEL 097 - Listening-Speaking
- Non-native speakers of English will develop effective listening and speaking skills for college and careers using real-life conversations, lectures, and presentations. Students will learn to communicate effectively by modifying their own speech to achieve conversational fluency and by applying strategies for communicating with different levels of formality, politeness, and directness.

Integrated Reading and Writing
ENGL098 (Integrated Reading and Writing I)
This course develops reading and writing skills for college and career success. Students co-enroll in one of the following pairs of Academic Support labs and introductory college-level classes: NCAS 103 and SOCL 120, or NCAS 104 and PSYC 200, or NCAS 105 and BUSN 118.
ENGL099 (Integrated Reading and Writing II)
This integrated reading and writing course uses the same curriculum and learning goals as ENGL121 and supports your work in the College Composition class. Students will get additional practice in reading strategies, writing and editing skills, research methods, and critical thinking aimed at enhancing success in ENGL121. The course also offers the opportunity to ask questions and get additional support from your professor and peers.
