The Lansing Community College English Department is hosting the annual Women’s Literature Read-In in honor of Women’s History Month on Wednesday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event is accessible both on campus and online.

The event will be held in the Grand River Room, room 1130 in the Gannon Building. Those who are unable to be on campus, or feel more comfortable attending virtually, can do so via Webex by clicking here.

This event is for anyone who wants to take some time and listen to the words of women writers. It is open to LCC staff, students and the public.

The Women's Literature Read-In started in 1999 to celebrate Women's History Month, according to English Department Professor Teresa Purvis.

“The intention behind the event was to highlight writing by women,” Purvis said. “Too often in literature classes, especially general education survey courses, women writers take a backseat to the better-known male writers.

“Some of this has improved greatly over the years with the publications of textbooks that recognize a need for diversity in the literature selections they present.”

Authors have the opportunity to read a piece of their choice. There is also opportunity for readers to read any piece that features a woman author.

“The Read-In is a fairly informal event with both readers and audience coming and going throughout the day,” Purvis said. “Some writers will be bringing copies of their books to sell and sign, and other readers will have a reading prepared that features a favorite woman author.”

Purvis said there will be about 15 readers and writers participating in the read-in.
