The LCC women’s basketball team won on the road Thursday, Nov. 8 against the Olivet College JV team, improving the Stars’ record to 2-1.
The game's final score was 65-61. Freshman Ellie Humble hit a three-point field goal with two minutes left to give LCC the lead. Shortly after, freshman teammate Peyton Anderson got a clutch steal on defense.
“Those last two minutes of the game we were able to close it really strongly,” first-year LCC Head Coach Megan Hudson said.
At the beginning of the game, Hudson said her team did not bring the energy she expected.
“We started slow,” Hudson said. “We were missing shots that we typically make and we had way too many turnovers for the style of basketball we like to play.”
After the slow start, Anderson became a “spark plug” on defense, as Hudson said. Anderson had multiple steals that led to some runs that helped the Stars stay in the game.
Anderson also had 17 points, contributing to the offensive side of the ball as well.
At half time, the team had a talk and the Stars pulled it together and began to play better.
“We started communicating and making better decisions,” Anderson said. “Ultimately I think after we came together it just helped our game.”
Hudson said as the team stepped up defense in the second half, and the offense started to come as well.
Anderson said she works on her defense constantly.
“It's something I like to work on a lot because I know the importance of it, “Anderson said. “Half your game is defense and half is offense. It helps that I am quick, but I think it is one of the most important skills of the game.”
The Stars’ next game will be on Wednesday, Nov. 15 against Cornerstone University JV. It will be the Stars’ first home game of the season. Action begins at 5:30 p.m.
