LCC Performing Arts is showcasing a new play starting today, Wednesday, Aug. 3, titled “Wiley and the Hairy Man.”

This free performance will take place at 7 p.m. in LCC’s outdoor amphitheater, between the Health and Human Services building and the Gannon Building. The show will run every night at 7 p.m. through this Sunday, Aug. 7.

According to the director of “Wiley and the Hairy Man,” Blake Bowen, the show is a folk tale about a young boy who, with the help of his mom, must outsmart a monster that lives in the surrounding swamp.

“There are several themes that we explore, including overcoming adversity, facing one’s fears, the power of imagination, and how our parents’ experience shapes our viewpoint for better or worse,” Bowen said. “All children are welcome as this show is really designed for younger viewers, although the adults will surely enjoy it as well.”

Because this show will be set outdoors, guests are welcome to bring their own umbrellas, chairs, food and drinks in accordance with LCC's guidelines.

One star of the show, Makayla Marrison, will be playing main character Wiley’s best friend, a loveable dog.

“I love that it’s an extremely movement-based character,” Marrison said. “As someone who’s always loved creative movement and dance, it’s been super fun exploring the numerous ways my body can appear dog-like.

“I’m most excited for audiences to see how different this show is. It’s not every day that you get to see a bunch of crazy, magical swamp creatures appear right before your eyes.”

Marrison said the play is very entertaining.

“This play is so fun, interactive, and perfect for the enjoyment of all ages,” she said. “My incredibly talented fellow cast mates and crew and I have worked so hard to bring this show to life, and we are beyond ecstatic to perform.”
