The LCC volleyball team won back-to-back matches at the Don Johnson Fieldhouse in Lansing on Monday, Oct. 24 and Tuesday, Oct. 25.

On Monday, the Stars won in five games against Ancilla College. The Stars won the first two games 25-13 and 25-16, lost the third and fourth games 25-16 and 25-22, and won the final game 15-10.

Against Ancilla, LCC freshmen Alex Widner and Danika Fyan led the Stars with 12 kills each. Sophomore Katelyn Whiteman delivered 44 assists for LCC. Freshman Macey Beyerlein had 17 digs.

“I think that the team actually pulled it together at the end,” sophomore Riley Wells said. “We’re learning how to finish and feel like this was a big feat for that.”

LCC Coach Emily Quintero said Ancilla was a tough rival.

“They have been known to give every team they have been playing a run for their money,” Quintero said. “It wasn’t a huge shock (to win); we knew we had to show up today. It was hard coming in on a Monday without a practice right before, but we finished it and that’s what we needed to do.”

On Tuesday, the Stars swept Southwestern Michigan College, winning in three games by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21.

Quintero said after losing against Southwestern Michigan previously, the Stars came out with revenge on their minds this time around.

Against Southwestern Michigan, LCC sophomore Olivia Sabec led the Stars with 12 kills. Whiteman delivered 34 assists for LCC. Widner had 17 digs.

These two wins put the Stars’ overall record at 13-15 and at 8-3 in the MCCAA Western Conference.

Prior to the win on Monday, the four sophomores on the team – Whiteman, Wells, Sabec and Audrey Bunnell – were honored.

“I’m very proud of the work that they’ve done, but I know they’ll go on to do some (more) great work,” Quintero said.

Bunnell commented on how she felt about moving on from LCC.
