“I really got into photography in high school,” said Cass Hopp, a photography program student. “I like the idea of journalism, but I like taking the photos more than the writing part.”

“That really inspired me to pursue the photography program, and while at school, there was a spot that opened up to work under Kevin Fowler.”

Fowler is the official photographer for LCC events, and is prolific in the Lansing area.

“Being able to work with someone who’s so experienced like Kevin, who’s been everywhere, has meant so much to me and it has progressed my skills in photography,” Hopp continued. “It has been such a great opportunity for me here at LCC. I am trying to stay as long as possible.”

Fowler spoke highly of Hopp’s skills.

“Cass was hired by our department a little more than a year ago and has progressed well in her art,” Fowler said. “Photography is a craft like any other art and Cass has a natural eye for it.”

Hopp said she plans to pursue a career in photography.

“I would like to start focusing on networking and making connections,” Hopp said. “Kevin knows … like everyone it seems. Having a successful career in photography is partially about who you know.”

Hopp mentioned how she is always looking to improve. She said networking is her top goal right now.

“I am starting to see people recognizing me, or remembering me from an event,” Hopp said. “I see that more people are using my photos. Like, I have one on the LCC site and that just makes me feel really good!”

Even though Hopp expressed her general love for photography, she does have some big dreams she wants to work toward.

“I am really into a lot of different music and go to a lot of concerts quite a bit,” she said. “I found that some bands hire one photographer to tour with them, which would be an amazing experience.

“But like I said, you really need to know people. I did find out recently that one of the bands I saw were actually taking applications for a concert photographer!”

Said Fowler: “When she hones in on her craft, she shows the patience and commitment. She works hard at perfecting the basics, and that is how she creates great results in her art. I believe she has the tenacity and motivation to reach her goals and successes.”
