Sophia's Spare Thoughts: 'A curious cat'

I began working at The Lookout by doing what any good journalist does – asking the right person the right questions.
I met Lookout Adviser Larry Hook at StarScapes last spring and struck up a conversation about art, clubs and which students were able to write for The Lookout. Quickly after that initial conversation I began writing pieces here and there about people and places I am passionate about.
As an art and design student, and vice president of the LCC Art Club, many of my pieces will revolve around student life at LCC and the art community at large in Lansing.
The Lookout has already been such a source of joy for me, and I would bet the biggest reason why is that at my core I am a curious cat. Getting to talk to folks in my community about what excites them has been one of the greatest parts of being back in school in general, and now I get paid to do that. Score!
This fall is my second semester at LCC, and returning to college has been such a huge dream of mine for years now. Every moment still feels sort of surreal.

There were times I wasn’t sure I would ever have a “first day of school” again; how
can I possibly be writing for the school paper?
That disbelief is one of my biggest motivating factors in the end. I know there are other people like myself who have taken a non-traditional path through education who struggle to see all that is possible for them.
I hope that through my pieces with The Lookout – and my time at LCC overall – I can exist as a mirror for those non-traditional students, uplift marginalized voices, and highlight the complexities of the student body and city as a whole.
When I’m not on campus, I can typically be found yapping at coffee shops, teaching art classes at REACH Community Art Center, or playing roguelikes on my couch at times I should definitely be sleeping.
