The Sign Language Club at Lansing Community College hosts weekly silent socials during which members review vocabulary and play games in American Sign Language.

They also gather every two weeks to host silent dinners with the local Deaf community.

According to Club Co-President Maddy Vasko, the club hosted a few events last semester. There was a Silent Retreat, which is an event with workshops about ASL and interpreting hosted by the Interpreter Training Program students. They also had a silent Halloween event, with members dressing up and decorating cookies.

“My favorite event was definitely the Silent Retreat,” Vasko shared. “I loved having the opportunity to have longer discussions about ASL concepts and Deaf culture.”

The club will be hosting a Valentine's-themed "Singles Celebration" event at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19 in the Gannon Building and a Silent Retreat on Sunday, April 23. Anyone who is taking Sign Language classes at LCC is welcome.

Club President Reece Davis expressed love for the club's weekly gatherings.

“My favorite club event is the weekly silent socials,” Davis said. “Every event has different games and activities, and it's nice to see other students in the program outside of class.”

Davis looks forward to the future sporting event he club is hosting in April.

“I'm looking forward to seeing the Flint Firebirds hockey game,” Davis said. “Not only will other club members be there, but we'll get to spend time with the local Deaf community as well.”
