The LCC Rock Band is performing a free end-of-the-semester concert on Sunday, April 30 at The Avenue Cafe from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Avenue Cafe is located at 2021 E. Michigan Ave. and is generally open from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day.

“This semester we are playing two sets at The Avenue, playing original compositions and cover songs ranging from the ‘70s to current,” LCC Rock Band Director Christopher Rollins said.

Rollins has been the director of the LCC Rock Band from its start around 20 years ago when it specialized in solo nylon string guitars.

According to Rollins, the band was originally a classic guitar ensemble in which students would have to read standard notation. This was a problem for some students who were not able to read music, but could play it.

Rollins said he enjoys participating in rock bands and jazz bands in his free time, so when LCC decided to offer a rock band as an alternative to other ensembles, he was onboard.

“Students learn to play together learning cover songs and writing their own original compositions, gaining an understanding on how songs are developed,” Rollins said. “Anyone can join LCC Rock Band, but some playing experience is helpful to the student.

“I will spend extra time with students who need more help, but this class is not the same as a private lesson, which we do offer at LCC.”
