Review: Acapulco Grill disappoints

Plate of food

According to The Lookout Staff Writer Jonah Unger, the food at the Acapulco Mexican Grill in Lansing is good, but the service leaves much to be desired. Photo by Jonah Unger

Two and a Half out of Five Stars

Acapulco Mexican Grill is located at 300 N. Clippert St. in Lansing. This Mexican restaurant is far from perfect, short from good and just barely decent.

Upon first arrival, I was forced to wait by the entrance along with several other people. Meanwhile, there were plenty of empty tables.

When I was finally given a place to sit, I was seated in the back near the loud kitchen, and traffic from waiters and waitresses.

I was given a complimentary amount of chips and salsa, which would have been nice if the salsa didn’t have a packing punch of cilantro in every bite I took. By the time I had finished half of the salsa, 90 percent of my bowl was large cilantro leaves.

The staff there was really friendly, but that was only when I saw a waiter at all. When I first sat down I made the mistake of telling my waiter I needed a minute, not realizing it was going to be 15 minutes before I’d see him again.

I saw my waiter three times over a time span of an hour: when I was first seated, when I ordered and when I asked for the check.

With this being said, the food was definitely enjoyable, as well as the horchata beverage I ordered. It all came out relatively quickly, considering the time I had to wait to order.

Eating there was nice. There were several TVs, all with different shows on. The restaurant itself was wonderfully decorated, with various art and fun decorations throughout the place.

The food was pretty good and filling. But just as I began to enjoy myself, one of the staff members began vacuuming the floor right beside me. It was loud and obnoxious.

Unfortunately, the good food and scenery wasn’t enough to excuse the rest. The food was slightly overpriced, which is fine, except I feel like I paid for bad service. For that reason I am giving it a rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars.
