The movie “Damsel” was released on Netflix on March 8. It is a dark fantasy, and has a star-studded cast.
Millie Bobby Brown plays a young woman named Elodie, who agrees to marry a prince in order to help her people. As soon as the two are married, however, Elodie realizes that her stepmother’s warning about the royals’ trustworthiness may have been correct.
Some other main stars of the movie include Nick Robinson, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone and Angela Bassett. Shohreh Aghdashloo is a voice actor in the movie.
I honestly knew very little about this movie going into it. The trailer promised everything I loved in fantasy novels when I was younger: dragons, sword fighting and renegade princesses.
Overall, I enjoyed it. It had a decent plot, and the action was done well. As far as the CGI went, there were moments when it was a little tacky, but I feel like that’s a given with any movie that has as much as this one did.
The graphics and everything for the dragon, though, were relatively impressive. I did very much like the fact that they gave the “fire-breathing” part of the dragon more of a dynamic by making it more lava-esque and less like just traditional fire.
The reason that I can only give it three and a half stars is, because as much as I enjoyed the movie, there was really only one twist that I didn’t expect. Most of the movie followed the traditional themes one would see in fantasy, making it easy to guess what comes next.
Every twist was done well, though, so even if I saw it coming, I still got joy from watching exactly how it played out. I would recommend this movie if you like fantasy, but be prepare to feel like you’re watching something familiar.
