Hope Heals: Education is a privilege

It’s the first day of school again and, even though I have had what feels like a million first days, I still get a little nervous. Old fears come rushing back and, suddenly, my mind is troubled.

What if I can’t find my class on the first day and get labeled the late girl? What if I hate the subject content so much that I fail the class? What if the teacher hates me and refuses to give me the help I need?

The fear just builds and builds, but the theoretical bell always rings anyways.

I prepare the same way I always have. I find my classes ahead of the time, leave home early and remember to be polite even on my worst days, knowing that I have never met an LCC teacher I didn’t like.

It all helps, but the thing that helps me relax the most is remembering what school means to me.

Education is a privilege. I truly believe that. I love school because it has always meant a chance at a better life. If you work hard in these halls, the opportunities that will find you are endless.

Knowledge is power.

Getting to go to class, study and receive a degree is a lifestyle choice that I fell in love with a long time ago. It’s been my longest relationship by far.

The start of this school year is extremely special for me because not only is this my last year at LCC, it is my first year as editor in chief of The Lookout.

I am unsure of what the future may hold, but a few things are for sure.

Sleeping is a pipe dream, everything has to be perfect and there is nothing that I won’t do to make sure that the coming issues of The Lookout are the best yet!

Being editor in chief is both a great honor and a great responsibility. I want to make sure that the entire student body and staff knows that I intend to be a vessel for all voices.

Tell me the things you would like to see investigated. Tell me some stories you might like to see featured. Send me good pictures of you and your friends on campus or at events!

The Lookout is a publication solely meant to spotlight the happenings around campus and brightness of the souls who inhabit it, so please don’t be afraid to speak up about what you would like to see.

I am so, so, SO excited about what’s to come and hope you are to. This is going to be a great year.

I wish you all a safe and happy first week and would like to challenge everyone who reads this to make an impact as a friend, student, employee and stranger on the street.

Change starts with us. Ready, set, GO!
