For the entire month of October, the LCC Library is hosting a LGBTQIA+ icon and book display highlighting the 2024 LGBTQ+ icons selected by the Equality Forum.

The display recognizes LCC’s involvement and achievements in the LGBTQIA2+ civil rights movement.

October is LGBT History Month, so students and staff can show support by checking out the many authors and icons on display on the first floor of the library. Those not on campus can find a digital book shelf on the Library’s October LGBTQIA2+ History Display.

From the LCC Library: “The LGBTQIA2+ community has so much to be proud of, and any month is an opportunity to celebrate our successes and those who have made, and continue to make, positive contributions to society.”

The digital display features a LGBTQIA2+ Library Guide, which provides information on campus resources, local and national organizations, and information locating e-books and other LGBTQIA2+ resources in the library.

“These books contain information about history you don’t always learn in school,” said Quintyn Harrison, a Help Zone employee. “(This is) information around the many facets of the civil rights movement and getting the perspective from the people who lived through it, and those who are currently affected.”

The library recognizes the modern civil rights movement, and how it actively affects students and the community, according to Fran Krempasky, a reference librarian and Prism member.

“You'll see that along with the icons,” Krempansky said. “We also have a selection of books, and those range from fiction to non-fiction biographies There is a lot to discover. All those books are available for students and faculties to check out.”

Krempasky is credited, along with Austin Gullett, and reference from The Equality Forum, for putting together this month’s display of LGBTQIA2+ authors and icons.

“We do this because it harbors a sense of camaraderie and inclusiveness,” said reference and instruction librarian Nadia El Anani. “It highlights resources for students, academic and personal, because this is a part of our community that we want to encourage and embrace.”
