Kelly's Korners: The best hot wings

One of my favorite things to eat are hot wings. Currently I am on a mission to find the best wing spot in Lansing and the surrounding area.

So far in the past week I have visited three restaurants that specialize in wings; Buffalo Wild Wings, Valley Wings and a newly opened restaurant, Wing Snob.

I am going to rank the restaurants based on their wings, the size, flavor, cooking style, overall service, and I’m going to throw in a wing's best friend: French fries.

Coming in at number three is Wing Snob located in the Frandor Shopping Center on Lansing’s east side. I tried both the traditional wings and boneless wings with a side of cheese fries.

Traditional wings - 6 out of 10
Boneless wings - 6 out of 10
Wings size - 7 out of 10
Flavor/sauce - 9 out of 10
Cooking style - 8 out of 10
French Fries - 7.5 out of 10
Overall service - 9 out of 10

I like the fact that Wing Snob offers a variety of sauces to choose from, with one being similar to the Blazin’ sauce at Buffalo Wild Wings. Unfortunately, ranch is sold separately here.

You have the option to add flavor to fries such as the wing sauces, cheese and chili cheese. For some reason I wasn’t able to redeem my coupon for a large fry, but the manager still offered me a free fry, making the service a 9 out of 10.

Next up, we have Valley Wings in Okemos at number two. I’ve also tried both the traditional and boneless wings, along with their specialty loaded fries.

Traditional wings - 9 out of 10
Boneless wings - 5 out of 10
Wing size - 8 out of 10
Flavor/sauce - 9 out of 10
Cooking style - 8 out of 10
French fries - 6.5 out of 10
Overall service - 10 out of 10

Valley Wings has opened me up to try dry rubs rather than wet sauces. I’m not really a fan of the buffalo sauce or the boneless wings here, but I do enjoy the traditional wings and the hot dry rub. The customer service and flexibility is always on point, though.

At no surprise, my number one spot belongs to Buffalo Wild Wings. Though, I admit the quality can be iffy depending on the location, so I’m going to base it off my favorite location: the ine on Delta Commerce Drive west of Lansing.

Traditional wings - 9 out of 10
Boneless wings - 10 out of 10
Wing size - 8.5 out of 10
Flavor/sauce - 10 out of 10
Cooking style - 8 out of 10
French fries - 10 out of 10
Overall service - 9 out of 10

Undoubtedly, the fries and boneless wings are the best I’ve tasted from any restaurant. I love the fact you can get dry seasonings on your fries, and the wings are always crispy and the meat is always juicy.

I’m still waiting for that one restaurant that can top my number one pick, though it has yet to come. Valley Wings did come pretty close.
