Global Student Tables open to anyone

The Global Student Discussion Tables are at LCC to help students whose native language
is not English. The discussion tables can be found in the LCC Learning Commons, located
in the TLC Building on the downtown campus.
“(This is) an opportunity to meet students learning English while discussing topics (ranging) from famous people, to foods we love,” said Vanessa Bell, coordinator of Global Student Services at LCC.
The discussions are free to attend without any registration. Students are not required to attend every meeting, and there is no homework involved.
“Students can get involved by coming to one of the discussion tables and encouraging others to come,” Bell said.
This gives students a safe space to learn English, as well as the opportunity to discuss various topics, from food to famous people, Bell said.
“The Learning Commons is responsible for the Global Student Discussion Tables,” Bell said. “This is a relaunch; not something new.”
Success coaches, the Learning Commons staff and various other department officials at LCC are making an effort to inform students of this event.
Upcoming discussions are today (Tuesday, March 21) from 2:10 to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, March 22 from 11:10 a.m. to noon in the Technology and Learning Center in room 1202. The discussion topic will be “This Day in History.”
The discussions feature fun topics to talk about, as students learn the ability to speak better English.
“They will be helping other students develop a communication skill they can use for the rest of their lives just by talking,” Bell said.
For more information, students can contact their success coach for a flier containing information regarding dates and times of future discussions. For questions or further information, students can email bellv@star.lcc.edu.
