I ducked into JJ’s Dog House, located at 625 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing, for this week’s review and have no regrets.
I saw JJ’s on the list of nearby restaurants and thought that it looked familiar. It turns out it is directly across the street from my favorite Starbucks location.
I walked in and was greeted by the owner Steve Joseph, who was also grill master of the day. Joseph is more affectionately known as “Stash.”
The inside is small but felt very open and comfy. I noticed the light fixtures and thought of them as “trendy.”
Stash said he has been open for three years now and serves the people of Lansing only the best hot dogs. While the menu keeps it short and to the point, I would have to agree.
“You have to try our Chicago Dog,” he said with a smile.
I got one because he seemed believable. I also ordered two Italian beef sliders, because I was committed to getting a full understanding of the menu.
I really loved the hot dog. It WAS one of the best I have ever had. I would go back for another tomorrow if I didn’t have a packed schedule.
The “Chicago Dog” was a Vienna beef dog in a poppy seed bun and there was relish, sport peppers, a pickle spear and mustard. I rarely allow that many toppings on a hot dog, but it was a magical combination.
The sliders were good; thinly sliced beef and a bunch of veggies. It wasn’t the slider I would usually order, but something I was happy to try.
My total came to around $14, which wasn’t bad. I left with a punch card promising the 11th visit would be free.
