If you are someone who wouldn’t mind catching a once-in-a-lifetime concert, be in the Dart Auditorium, located on the LCC’s downtown campus, at 3 p.m., this Sunday, July 14.
“La Batterie,” directed by LCC Faculty Member Mike Daniels, is a percussion concert that has been around since the 1980s. Sadly, this Sunday will be the last performance ever directed by Daniels.
Performing Arts Coordinator Paige Tufford said this is because Daniels is 72 and is just ready to start winding down.
Although there is a bittersweet tone surrounding the event, she said there is still a lot to look forward to.
According to Tufford, not only will there be over 20 drum kits on stage, but there will also be a few local bands on the setlist, including Bash Battalion, Ritmo, Atomic Boogaloo and Jazz Dogs.
“They (guest bands) will be performing one piece each,” Tufford said. “Mike has also composed a few original selections, so they will be performing those as well.”
Bands will be arriving and beginning to set up as early as 8 a.m., but Tufford believes it will all be worth it in the end to have such a full stage. She said admission is free but seats will fill up fast!
“This is the first time the show has been back since the pandemic and since Dart was renovated, so we are really excited,” she said.
As always, donations to LCC’s Music Scholarship Fund are accepted, but not necessary for entry.
LCC Admissions Counselor Taylor Vaught shared that, as a former drummer, he thinks this is a really cool opportunity for both students and staff.
“I like to see different varieties of musicians that come around,” Vaught said. “Seeing this percussion group would definitely be interesting for me. I am going to try to make it.”
Tufford’s last suggestion to the attendees is simple:
“Maybe bring some earplugs if you are sensitive to percussion.”
