In our society, it is common for those that are unique to be treated differently. This includes those who have disabilities.

Going to college is difficult enough on its own without having to arrange accommodations. The purpose of the LCC Disability Advocacy Club is to provide support and spread awareness for and about those with disabilities.

The club works closely with the Adult Resources Center at LCC, creating a community.

Hunter Holloway, a member of the club, said a privilege of being involved is “introducing new people to the club,” which could be seen by his presence manning a table at the recent Club Fair.

Not only does the club provide a supportive atmosphere for common ground between its members, but also a place to make friends and share stories.

For example, member Alyssa Shaltry was open and excited about sharing how she won a bouncy ball at the club fair, explaining that she had been collecting bouncy balls for years.

Interestingly though, there is a strict stipulation Shaltry follows, only acquiring them by earning or winning each one. Impressively, her collection is up to 14 in total.

The club is designed for disability advocacy, especially supporting those who need more help than others.

“It’s important to know that you don’t have to be disabled to join,” Shaltry said with a smile. “There’s some kind of misconception surrounding that.”

The club is welcome and open to all students, regardless of individual needs. Members meet every other Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Adult Resource Center in the Gannon Building, behind the StarZone.

Contact Adviser Frank Taylor at taylorf5@lcc.edu for more information regarding the club.
