For the spring break week, my mother and I are taking a cruise.

This will be the second mommy-daughter vacation my mom and I have gone on in just as many years, and all I can say is: I highly recommend it.

My mommy-daughter vacation is quickly becoming a new annual thing for my mother and me, and for good reason. For one week of every year, we get to spend a whole week together away from everyone else, and just enjoy each other’s company.

Life gets busier the older you get. It seems and more and more often I can’t make it to our weekly family dinners. However, it’s important to carve out time for the ones you love, and trips like these are a love language for my mother and me.

This trip gives us something to look forward to with together, plan and then attend. It is a great opportunity to spend quality time together.

Although being on a cruise that is visiting the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands for the vacation is a plus, it definitely is not a requirement. I would have just as much fun with my mom if we had taken a weekend camping trip up north to explore the U.P., or just spent a day at the spa. All that matters is that we’re able to have that time together.

This cruise in particular holds a special place in our hearts because March 6 is the day that my older brother, Keith, passed away from pneumonia 12 years ago. His death and influence are big reasons why we stress the importance of quality time in our family. We try to ensure that we have at least one family trip family get-together every year.

Family is more important than anything to me, and I am just so grateful to be able to have this time with my mom in such an amazing place.

I look forward to the day that my own daughter will join us and we can have a three-generation family trip.
