For Black History Month, LCC’s Academic Success Coach Team has curated an event that caters to the learning of Black history. The event will include card games, Monopoly, trivia and more.
The Black History Learning Day event will be hosted on Thursday, Feb. 16, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Gannon Building Adult Resource Center, in room 2302.
In addition to the games, there will be a raffle and prize giveaway, pizza and music, according to Academic Success Coach Larry Smith.
“We will have plenty of interactive games that teach Black history,” Smith said. “The giveaways will include school supplies, gift cards and more.”
A guest speaker is also expected to attend the event to inform students about the EMT program at LCC.
”We’ve invited a guest speaker who will speak about the Emergency Medical Technician Program at LCC that was started by African-American men,” Smith said. “A group of Black men saw the need for EMT training in the Lansing community and decided to get it started, so that will be interesting to learn about.”
LCC student Kianah James said she is looking forward to attending the Black History Learning Day event.
“I’m happy to see that there is an event honoring Black History Month,” James said. “I like that we can incorporate fun while also teaching the history of African Americans.”
James said she is hoping to see more events around LCC that honor Black History Month.
“I haven’t really heard much about Black History Month events around here,” James said. “Hopefully, more events are in the works of being planned. I would really appreciate knowing that the college cares about our history.”
