February is National Black History Month, and LCC is celebrating with events hosted by the Black History Awareness Committee (BHAC).The events are focused on educating students through experiences including film and art, business events and guest speakers.
“The Black History Awareness Committee is dedicated to facilitating the education and celebration of the rich heritage of African Americans in History,” said Melissa Kaplan, Academic and Arts Outreach coordinator. “BHAC presents a variety of programming, social and learning opportunities.”
Kaplan said the 2024 National Black History Month theme is African American and the Arts.
“Coming up on Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. in the Michigan Room is the annual Malcolm X Symposium,” Kaplan said. “Our event will feature a wonderful variety of art forms, including poetry, mime, dramatic monologues, dance and drumming. There’s no charge to attend.”
The Malcolm X Symposium invites all students, staff, faculty, as well as those in the community who are interested, in looking further into the Black experience.
All throughout February, there will be weekly events recognizing Black History Month. Many are being presented by the Cesar Chavez Learning Center including “Tangled Roots: A Conversation on the Significance of African American Women’s Hair.”
LCC Historians at the Movies, in collaboration with the Historical Society of Greater Lansing, is presenting a film and discussion session titled: “Pave the Way: They Even Took the Dirt.”
Students, faculty and staff are welcome to explore dates and times to attend some or all of these cultural events. Visit The Black History Events Calendar or the Cesar E. Chavez Learning Center Calendar of Events for more information.
