LCC Performing Arts is showcasing a new coming of age story, “I Knock at the Door,” starting Thursday, March 16, in the Black Box Theatre, in room 1422 of the Gannon Building.

The play is an autobiography, written by Irish writer Sean O’Casey. It is scheduled to appear March 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. Opening night will be a cash-only, pay-what-you-can, fundraiser for the Theater Scholarship Fund.

According to the director of the play, Andy Callis, this play is a story about a child growing up in Dublin in the 1880s.

“His family has a lot of obstacles,” Callus said. “They’re really poor. The father passes away and the child is born with eyesight problems, so that makes going to school very difficult for him. Despite the sadness, there is also a lot of humor.”

According to Callis, this play will be done in a reader-theater style, which means that the six actors performing will read directly from the script and change their voices to adapt to 50 different and unique characters.

“It’s sort of like a novel and has a narrator that allows us to hear what’s going on inside of the character’s heads,” Callis said. “There is also Irish music in the show done by a tin whistle by a vocal musician.”

Callis said he is most excited for audiences to see the family dynamics. According to him, the mother of the family is a very strong character. He said because the story is viewed from a child’s naive point of view, the audience will catch onto certain things and dynamics that the child does not.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or online here. Ticket prices are $10 for general admission and $5 for students with a valid StarCard. For more information on the play, visit the Performing Arts website here.
