Lansing Community College

Lansing Community College is built on an ideal of equality. It was founded in 1957 with the ambition to teach anyone who wanted to learn. Our vision statement - "serving the learning needs of a changing community" – reflects that aim. We are here to serve our community, to welcome everyone, to help all students achieve their goal.

However, we know it is not enough to welcome everyone. Equality is not equity. We have to meet students where they are, to provide them with wraparound supports to help them in and out of the classroom, and to model the same diversity in our workforce that we see in our student body. LCC has taken numerous steps to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the past several years. DEI is an expression of how well we value, engage and include the rich diversity of our community, including our students, faculty, staff, alumni and surrounding community members.

How we are leading
The LCC Equity Action Plan will

  • Provide an explicit, integrated, strategic, college-wide approach to our inclusion and diversity efforts;
  • Create a culture of accountability on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI); and
  • Invite individual and collective responsibility for inclusion and equity...It's not just one person's job, it's OUR collective responsibility!

Equity Center Initiatives

LCC Office of Diversity and Inclusion - Equity Center

  • Equity Leaders for Inclusion (ELI)

    (ELI) are employees who serve as the point of contact for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts within every LCC unit or department. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion will ensure ELIs receive appropriate training to serve in this capacity. Engaging activities for ELIs include:

    • Diversity and inclusion planning and implementing equity strategies with departmental members.
    • Report to the equity and inclusion director and chief diversity officer on department-level DEI efforts being conducted campuswide.
    • Serve as point of contact and liaison leader for DEI-related concerns at the department level.

  • DEI Dashboard:

    The DEI Dashboard was designed to enable and advise college leaders on where to make investments in talent in an effort to create a more inclusive workforce at LCC. The dashboard allows a breakdown of the workforces by division, department/unit and job level and answers questions like: "Which areas of the college are not diverse?" or "How diverse is my leadership distribution?"

  • We're Better Than That:

    The "We're better than THAT" campaign will educate LCC law enforcement professionals, students, faculty and staff on ways to approach difficult conversations on divisive topics and to stop hate speech and racism in our community. Racism and hate speech have no place at the Lansing Community College. We aspire to be a community whose members are equally valued and respected.

    Phase 1:

    Sign the Pledge! Never remain silent when observing racist behavior in the LCC community.
    Fall 2021 Launch

    Phase 2:

    Workshop Series: Becoming Antiracist. Engage with peers and learn best practices about how to address prejudice that may be within our own communities.
