Gary King

Academic Success Coach

Gary King is originally from Pontiac, Michigan. He is a first generation college graduate who attended Grand Valley State University. There is where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Health Communication and a Master's degree in Higher Education with a concentration in College Student Affairs & Leadership.

As a graduate student at GVSU, Gary was a graduate assistant for two years, he worked with incoming conditionally admitted freshman students, through the Freshman Academy program. He prided himself on helping his students overcome culture shock and becoming connected to campus-making a home away from home. Upon completion of his Master's Degree at GVSU, he relocated to Chicago, IL to be an academic advisor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. During his 3 years at UIC, he also taught several sections of a freshman seminar course entitled Success in the City. The focus of the course was to help students successfully make the transition from high school to college while also introducing them to the rich history of the city of Chicago through diversity and architecture.

In his spare time Gary enjoys spending as much time with family as possible. Attending, watching and playing sports are some of his favorite past-times. He also enjoys fishing, catching a good movie and crossing new destinations off of his bucket list. He is super excited to be one of the new success coaches! He looks forward to "helping maximize your potential while making the most out of your LCC experience".
