What are your office hours? 

When classes are in session during fall and spring semesters, reception hours are Monday through Wednesday 7:45 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday 7:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. &  Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Summer session and break hours vary. Tutoring times in addition to these hours may be available upon request.  Contact the office for more information.

Can I get tutoring for a placement or proficiency test?

Tutoring Services offers tutoring to LCC students in the course(s) in which the student is enrolled.  Tutoring is designed to supplement students' learning, not take the place of a class.

The Mathematical Skills Department has sample math placement test questions on its web site.  This gives a general idea about the various concepts for each level of math and how to prepare for the placement test.  If you need assistance with reviewing materials for placement tests, it is best to start with a sample test available from Mathematical Skills or the Assessment Center. Tutors are available for students taking Math Boost.  Once you have taken the tests, check with the Advising Center to discuss recommendations for what class(es) to take.

When enrolled in a recommended course, you can request tutoring. This may increase your likelihood of succeeding in the class.

Please note:  Placement tests help assess each student's basic reading, writing, and math skills.  These tests help determine if a student has the skills needed to comprehend the basics of a course. If a student does not have the skills needed to begin the class, then it would usually be very difficult for that person to succeed.  Placement test scores correlate with courses LCC designed to assist students in developing necessary skills.

When should I fill out a tutoring request form?

Tutoring is scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. It is best to submit a tutor request form soon after you know your semester schedule.  Some people fill-out their tutor request forms right after registering for classes.  Tutor request forms are taken on an on-going basis throughout the semester.

How much does tutoring cost?

Tutoring is offered free of charge for LCC students in the class(es) in which they are enrolled.  

  What should I bring to a tutoring session?

You should bring what you would bring to class such as course syllabus, class notes, textbook, calculator, pencils, pens, etc. 

Are there tutors in every subject?

Tutoring is available for most introductory courses. To find out if there is tutoring in your course, simply contact us.

Do I need to prepare for a tutoring session?

Before your tutoring session, you should prepare by doing your class reading and homework and preparing a list of questions or topics that you would like to cover.  If you feel totally lost, think of two or three general questions

Can I get tutoring for more than one class?

Yes, if there is a tutor for the class during an open time in  your schedule.  Simply submit a separate tutor request form for each class, and we will do our best to schedule you with a tutor who can help you with both courses during your weekly appointment.

What should I do if I need more tutoring than is available?

LCC has a wealth of resources to assist students.  

Start by asking your instructor if s/he has office hours or appointment times available to assist you.  Also ask if s/he uses e-mail to correspond with students.  Many LCC classes use the internet-based program Angel to post helpful information, correspond with students, answer questions, etc.  Ask your instructor if there is an Angel site for your class. 

Some departments have walk-in assistance available: The Liberal Studies Academic Resource Center (LSARC) is located in Arts & Sciences Room 455 and hours are posted on the web site. The Writing Center is located in Arts & Sciences Room 251 - they will be coming to the web soon.  The Accounting Lab is in Gannon Building Room 115. Departments such as Mathematical Skills have very useful information on their web sites.

You may also request additional time from Tutoring Services.  Stop in or call and see if a tutor is available for a same-day, walk-in appointment.

How many sessions of tutoring may I have?

You may request more time if needed.  Tutoring Services will attempt to honor these requests when possible.

Tutoring Services usually has more tutoring requests than available appointment.  You may be scheduled with one or two other students from a class or have one appointment time to cover more than one class. (For example, a student may be assigned one 50 minute tutoring appointment per week to cover both Writing and Psychology.) We attempt to give all students one appointment per week before we give an individual more than one scheduled appointment per week.

What should I do if I need to miss a tutoring session?

If you need to miss a scheduled appointment, call (517) 483-1206 or email tutoringsvcs@lcc.edu  the office. Let the staff know that you will not be coming, so that the tutor can work with some other student. You may be able to reschedule or receive a walk-in appointment.

If you miss two sessions, including excused absences, and would like to continue tutoring,  you will need to resubmit a tutoring request by contacting our office. The appointment may be given to someone else in which case you will have to wait for the next available opening.

Is this the only place on campus to get help with a class?

No! Your instructor is the primary source of information and help for a class. Also check with the department through which the class is offered. Often there are tutors and walk-in help offered in connection with the class. Check out LCC's Support Services for information on counseling, advising, and learning resources.

If I am late for an appointment, will the tutor wait for me? 

Yes, the tutor will wait 10 minutes for you. Likewise, we ask that you wait 10 minutes for the tutor if necessary.  If  you know ahead of time you will be running late, please call and leave the tutor a message.

 Could I become a tutor?

Job descriptions for all Tutoring Services positions can be found in our Employment section. Applications for available positions may be completed through LCC's HR Department.

Student tutor positions are posted in the Center for Employment Services in the Student Services Center on the second floor of the Gannon Building . You must be enrolled for at least six credits and have an overall grade point average of 2.7, with a 3.0 in your major areas to qualify.

Are tutors evaluated?

Everyone who attends a tutoring session is encouraged to complete a survey. The surveys are available in the Tutoring Services Office. Please feel free to discuss questions or concerns with your tutor and/or the Tutoring Services Coordinator.

Can I get a tutor to help me online?

Online tutoring is done on an appointment basis using e-mail and LCC's Angel site.  Please complete a Tutoring Request Form  and indicate  that you would like online tutoring.  Return the completed tutor request form to our office in Arts & Sciences Room 103 or by any of the methods indicated in our Tutoring Request Form  link.  Please feel free to call (517) 483-1206 if you have questions about our scheduling process. 

 Can I  e-mail or chat using LCC's computers?

The guidelines for acceptable use of LCC's computers can be found under LCC's Acceptable Use Policy.  In addition to these guidelines, some of the LCC computer labs may have their own rules.  Computer users are expected to follow all rules that apply.

 Why do I need a Technology User ID (TUID)?

Your Technology User ID (TUID) will give you access to Banner and Angel.  Banner allows you to register online, check transcripts, print schedules, and many other things.  If you are enrolled in an online  section of a class, you will need to use your TUID to access the class materials through the course's Angel site.  Angel may be used by your instructor(s) to communicate with you, to provide class information, and to share other course-related features in both online or lecture classes.  Please check your course syllabus or ask your instructor if Angel will be used in your class(es).
