LCC Board of Trustees Initiatives

In the summer of 2000, the LCC 2000-2007 Strategic Plan was adopted by a unanimous vote of the LCC Board of Trustees. The plan has a seven-year horizon and includes an ongoing process for implementation and renewal. The plan was updated in May of 2003, and the Board engaged in a renewal process in March 2005. Lansing Community College has been selected to develop a new curriculum to prepare Michigan workers to work in Alternative Energy Technologies. The $250,000 grant, awarded by NextEnergy, will fund a multi-year program to develop a curriculum guide for two year associates degrees in Alternative Energy Technology (AET). Alternative Energy Technology includes a variety of new methods to provide power including the use of fuel cells, wind, solar, biomass, hybrids and more. The program will also support AET continuing education coursework for retraining workers transitioning from similar areas, creation of a one year certificate, and coursework for students wishing to transfer to four year programs.

This grant-funded program is part of an Alternative Energy initiative at the College that includes powering the new Michigan Technical Education Center and Technical Training Center in Delta Township with alternative energy. This program will use the facility as a demonstration site to study a successful application of a variety of alternative energies.

LCC will work in collaboration with the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Lawrence Tech, Kettering University, the Lansing School District, Small Business Association of Michigan, General Motors, EDS, Lansing Board of Water and Light, Plug Power and DTE to create a relevant and industry responsive curriculum to jump start Michigan's educational efforts in alternative fuels to provide an introduction of the subject matter into existing courses within one year.
