High Performance/Motor Sports
Are you interested in racing? Do you like working on high performance cars? If so, the High Performance Technology/Motorsports program at LCC is for you! In this program, students have the opportunity to build high performance engines using state of the art technology and then test them on an engine dynamometer. Students will diagnose and tune vehicles for improved performance on our chassis dynamometer and gain hands-on experience building a race car chassis. Certificate and associate degree programs are offered.
Your certificate or Associate's degree would consist of instruction in the following areas:
Race Engine Machining
Students are instructed in proper use of cylinder boring equipment.
They learn setup and operation of milling machines, how to operate a
computer controlled cylinder honing machine, the proper setup and use of
line honing equipment. Students learn basics of cylinder head
preparation, cylinder block preparation, and engine balancing. Students will
learn all the facets of proper and accurate machine shop procedures and
machine operation.
Race Engine Assembly
This class consists of instruction in the latest advancements in ace
engine
technology. Discussions of the newest technological advancements in
engine components and their proper assembly to maximize power and
durability. Hands-on experiences gained by proper disassembly and
measurements of GM's latest GEN-4 V8 engines then instruction in proper
reassembly of the engines.
Race Engine Dynamometer
Students will gain hands-on experience in dynamometer setup and operation on
our state-of-the-art DTS 1000 Horsepower Engine Dynamometer. Students
will also be instructed in proper engine break-in and tuning procedures-
-both
carbureted and fuel injection. Students will also learn proper maintenance
procedures to keep the dynamometer running properly.
Race Engine Design I and Design II
In this class, teams of two students design, assemble, and test a
V-8 engine. They will then attempt to achieve set criterion for
engine
performance. Design I students attempt to achieve a prerequisite
torque figure with their engines and are graded accordingly. In Design
II, students are allowed to modify their original engine to attempt to
achieve prerequisite horsepower numbers and are graded accordingly.
All testing is done in-house on our engine dyno.
Chassis Fabrication
Students taking this class will learn proper methods of chassis fabrication.
They will then add an engine and transmission,
suspension, and tires and test the vehicle. Prior welding experience
is highly recommended for this class.
Open Lab Classes
If there is a sufficient quantity of students interested, we will conduct a
High Performance open lab class. Students are allowed to work on their
own projects using the school's equipment. Students are supervised by
a performance program instructor and will be graded on progress made
on their projects.
