Histologic Technology, Associate in Applied Science
Lansing Community College, in conjunction with the Ingham Intermediate School District Capital Area Career Center, offers a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) approved Certificate Program and an Associate in Applied Science degree in Histologic Technology.
Histologic technicians work together with other laboratory personnel as a team to provide doctors with information for making the most accurate diagnosis possible for patients. Histologic technicians work under the supervision of a Pathologist in the preparation of tissue specimens for diagnosis. Their duties include:
- Assisting the Pathologist with gross tissue preparation and description
- Preserving, embedding and sectioning tissue specimens
- Mounting specimens on microscope slides
- Staining specimens to show microscopic detail
Current and future employment prospects look bright for skilled technicians in this field. Average starting salary for a Histologic Technician is approximately $34,000 per year. Histologic Technicians may find employment in:
- Hospitals
- Clinical Laboratories
- Medical and University Research Laboratories
- Veterinary Pathology
- Forensic Pathology
- Pharmaceutical Companies
The Histologic Technician Certificate program includes 16 Directed Histotechnology Study credits to be taken at the Capital Area Career Center as well as 8 additional credits through Lansing Community College. Successful completion of the certificate program allows graduates to sit for the national certification examination given by the Board of Registry. Upon successful completion of the certification exam, and an additional 46 specified credits, an Associate in Applied Science degree will be granted. Histologic Technicians with an Associate in Applied Science degree will have greater job opportunities in human diagnostic laboratories.
