Environmental Technology                                                               

Lansing Community College offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree in Environmental Technology.  Future job prospects for Environmental Technicians continue to increase as government, private agencies, and industry continue environmental monitoring and clean-up.  Environmental Technicians collect samples in the field or laboratory, calibrate sampling instruments, and prepare reports.  Types of employers and work include:

• U. S. Environmental Protection Agency -- monitoring the environment, site clean-ups

• Michigan Department of Environmental Quality -- monitoring the environment, site clean-ups

• County and City Government -- registered sanitarian, landfill operator, urban storm-water permit writer, health inspector,
  waste management

• Environmental Consulting Companies -- laboratory and field sampling, storage tank removal, waste clean-up

• Public Utilities -- environmental monitoring, construction monitoring

• Manufacturing -- monitoring industrial hygiene, plant discharge monitoring, waste clean-up

• Packaging & Food Service companies, and many others...

As an employee, your work day would never be dull, because new situations continuously present themselves, both in the laboratory and the field.  For your efforts, you can expect a starting salary of $25,000 to $32,000 with full benefits including health insurance.

This program requires good written and oral communication skills and a foundation of basic science.  Computer and sampling methods used in environmental data management will be required.
