Technical Requirements

What computer hardware and software do I need?

To take an online course at LCC you will need a computer which is able to access and interact with the web.  A high speed internet connection is highly recommended. A Pentium PC or PowerMac with at least 256Mb will significantly improve your interactive learning experience. Additional hardware such as a CD-ROM and/or sound card (with speakers or headphones) may be required for some courses.

You must also have a working knowledge of computers and an appropriate word processing software package–Microsoft Word is suggested. If you are uncertain about your computer skills, Lansing Community College offers a number of one-day seminars for persons interested in improving or developing their Internet of personal computer skills. You may wish to complete one or more of these seminars before you begin your actual course work.

The recommended browsers to use with Angel are the current versions of Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.  Students may encounter technical difficulties while using Angel with browsers other than Firefox or Explorer.  If students currently use AOL as their Internet Service Provider they should minimize or exit out of the AOL browser once they are connected to the Internet and then open either Firefox or Explorer to use as their browser.  Macintosh users should use Firefox instead of Safari as their browser.

To scan your computer to  determine what hardware and software you have installed visit LCC's technical help desk website.

What type of Internet connection is recommended?

We encourage all students to obtain their Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable, direct  connection to the Internet.  A high speed internet connection such as DSL or Cable is recommend.  Although a dial up connection may be used, students may find pages load slowly and angel email requires a longer time to access.

All students taking online courses must submit their e-mail address when registering for courses. If you are unsure that you have submitted your email address you may contact the online courses office at 483-1880 or 1-800-644-4522 ext. 1880.

What if I don't have the computer system or Internet connection that is required?

Of course, a primary reason for taking a course online is the convenience of not having to travel to the Lansing campus. If you do not have other access to the required level of computer equipment and connection, the College computer lab is available with the appropriate equipment. Information about the computer lab is available at http://www.lcc.edu/computerlab/
