What Are The Technical Requirements For Taking An Online Course?
What computer hardware and software do I need?
You will need a computer
which is able to access and interact with the "web." The
following is a minimum hardware configuration for the access and
participation in the courses offered on line: A 486 or Mac 040,
with a 14.4 Kbps modem. A Pentium or PowerMac with a 28.8 Kbps
or faster modem and 16 MB or more of RAM will significantly
improve your on-line connections. You will also need
approximately 100MB of storage space on your hard drive. Your
browser (Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, etc.) must be a
4.0 version or higher. A CD-ROM and sound card is required for
some courses. Check the individual course web pages for more
specific requirements and guidelines.
You must also have a working knowledge of computers and an
appropriate word processing software package? Microsoft Word or
WordPerfect are suggested. If you are uncertain about your
computer skills, Lansing Community College offers a number of
one-day seminars for persons interested in improving or
developing their Internet of personal computer skills. You may
wish to complete one or more of these seminars before you begin
your actual course work.
What type of Internet connection is recommended?
We encourage all students to obtain their Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable, direct PPP connection to the Internet. Students using information services provided by AOL or Prodigy or other proprietary information providers may not be satisfied with the connection provided to Lansing Community College servers.
All students taking an online courses must submit their e-mail address when registering for courses. If you are unsure that you have submitted your email address you may contact the online courses office at 483-1880 or 1-800-644-4522 ext. 1880. Electronic mail is a critical element in communicating with your instructor and classmates. We recommend you use the electronic mail service provided by your ISP. Some free electronic mail services have unexplained delays in service. If you use one of these free services, be alert to the possibility to delays in delivery of electronic mail.
What if I don't have the computer system or Internet connection that is required?
Of course, a primary reason for taking a course online is the convenience of not having to travel to the Lansing campus. If you do not have other access to the required level of computer equipment and connection, the College computer lab is available with the appropriate equipment. Information about the computer lab is available at /computerlab/
