LCC to Offer Aquatics Program at Lansing Community Center
LANSING 9/17/12 – Beginning with spring semester 2013, Lansing Community College will be offering aquatics courses, instructional swimming programs, and recreational swimming at the Alfreda Schmidt-Southside Community Center, 5815 Wise Road, Lansing.
The move to the Community Center allows LCC to close the decaying pool in the Gannon Building and begin renovation of the facility, which will include a much-needed student commons and reconfigured student services area.
The pool at the Center is the same size as the Gannon pool with spacious locker room facilities. It is more ADA (Americans for Disabilities Act) accessible than Gannon. Parking is free and the Center is on a public bus line.
The aquatics courses will continue to be taught by faculty from the Physical Fitness and Wellness program at the college.
A new “Learn to Swim” summer camp will be offered in the summer of 2013 to underserved children and youth in the area. Registration details will be available next spring.
“Learning to swim is not only fun and great exercise, it’s also the only sport that can literally save your life,” said Margie Clark, Dean of Health and Human Services. ”Because it is vital that children learn to swim early, we are very pleased to be adding a free summer camp to our roster of offerings.”
Renovation of Gannon is expected to begin in early 2013.
