The first class session students will learn basic sewing etiquette, sewing techniques, machine operation, and variety of stitches. Comic Book Illustration

Learn how to draw your character repeatedly in a variety of action poses, positions, and expressions, draw backgrounds, learn and apply panel-to-panel story transitions, add text and dialogue to panels, and finally, finish one page of continuous panel-to-panel artwork.

You will become the trendsetter and design your very own clothing line using old clothes. With guidance from your instructor you will learn to sketch it, cut it, sew it, and wear it for a fashion show for parents at the end of the week.

This second part of Green Fashion Design, requested by students, will offer time to develop more fashion projects from their old wardrobe. Resale stores offer an endless source of possibilities! Students will continue to revamp, restyle and recycle clothing items of no use into useful fun fashions for today. Buying new isn't always the answer to what is fashionable but it may be the answer to looking great and becoming a trendsetter on a budget.

PinterestPalooza/Estyfest Camping Arts & Crafts without the Camping

This artisan class, geared for students entering 5th grade through 8th, will be a hands-on, gender-neutral Pinterest/Etsy crafting extravaganza. Students will be introduced to several "arts" and "crafts" during the day and have ample opportunity to expand their knowledge with a 20-year Veteran Scout. Many skills and techniques will be shared, along with hand-outs, safety skills, and crafting expertise. Included in these activities will be: wire-beading, metal stamping, classy shrink-dinks, friendship bracelets, decorative magnets, plastic canvas, decorative tiling, decoupage trinket boxes, wood-burning, simple book binding, paper making, leather-stamping, and polymer clay tags. Any Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts will complete several requirements for badge work (depending on the level) but all are welcome and no previous skills are required.

Flight and the Future

Take a field trip to the Lansing Airport to see airplanes up close and tour the Control Tower. Explore the future of aviation including various applications, rules for and ethical uses of drones. Have a front row seat to see the LCC Youth Program Phantom Drone at work.

This course provides an introduction to the techniques of microbiology and the field of public health. Students will take environmental samples, grow cultures, and use microscopes to examine microorganisms, including household pests. Students will also study food preservation techniques and test the ability of antibiotics to stop the growth of bacteria.

Robotics and Rocketry

This hands-on class is a blast! You will start by learning about robotics, electrical circuits, and components. You will learn to take apart old electrical equipment to scavenge parts for your own small robots - you can even bring in your own machines from home that no longer work or aren't needed. Finally, working on your own or with a partner, you'll design and build a small robot that is able to perform a unique task. Then your adventure in rocketry begins as you study principles of lift-off and flight. The class will be launching several rockets - with the guidance and oversight of the course instructor. Along the way, you will develop and use your skills in math, science, and problem-solving. Students should bring household electronic devices that are no longer being used to provide the pieces for a robot of their own creation.

Everything we do "hinges" on what we know about how our body moves. In this class students will learn about our body's bones, muscles and joints (BMJ). What are the names of the bones and why are they shaped the way they are? What holds our bones together to make joints? What different kinds of muscles does our body have and how do they work with our bones and joints? Class activities will include identifying BMJ, dissection of BMJ, and the application of BMJ to everyday activities and common injuries.

Meanwhile, 4% of lost remotes are found in the fridge or freezer, and 2% turn up somewhere outdoors or in the car. Statistics and probabilities give us information about the world around us and the likelihood that something is going to happen. Come to this exciting class to learn how to analyze and interpret the numbers much like Google and lots of other big companies. Linked to the national core standards, this class provides a foundation in statistics and probabilities that will take you beyond grade level expectations. There will be hands on activities, applications, projects, and practices. Also, TI-84 graphing calculators will be used during classes.
