The Arts and Sciences Division at Lansing Community College is proud to offer two unique Study Abroad Opportunities for our students: Literary Ireland and Japan Immersion.
From the English Department, Literary Ireland: Knowing about how the cultural and personal experiences of the reader influence the reading of the text and how the cultural and personal experiences of the writer influence the writing of the text; Knowing about meaning: how to question, compare, connect, and interpret.
From the Communication, Media, and the Arts Department, Japan Immersion: We in Foreign Languages think this a very exciting concept and would like very much to share that excitement with you. Skill in a second language is your gateway to worlds of international business, education, and friendship.
Literary Ireland 2016
Do you read for adventure? What if the adventure could be real? Join us in Ireland, as we seek the unexpected and experience Irish literature.
Literary Ireland is a 3-credit study-abroad program that begins with class meetings on LCC's main campus for the last eight weeks of spring semester (2 hours per week). Tentative travel dates for 2016 are May 14 to June 1 (Students meet in Dublin Sunday, May 15). Students will travel between three base sites in Ireland-Dublin, Sligo, and Galway. In Dublin and Galway, students will be housed in efficiency apartments, and in Sligo at a central city hotel. At each location students will participate in a variety experiences including visits to ancient historical sites, cultural tours, literary events-museums, theater performances, lectures, walking tours, with time to enjoy the Irish landscape, people, arts, and culture. Students will read selections from Irish mythology and some of the greats of Irish literature-Synge, Yeats, Swift, Wilde, Joyce, Heaney, and Shaw, in addition to some contemporary Irish writers.
Japan Immersion 2016
LCC students will have the opportunity to complete an internship with a Japanese company, academic research, and language study and practice in Lansing's sister city, Otsu, located in Michigan's sister state, the Shiga Prefecture.
The Japan Immersion program will include the following life-changing activities:
- A four-credit LCC study-abroad course including a part-time academic internship on the Biwako Kisen Company (BKC) Michigan Boat, a Mississippi River-style stern-wheeler on Lake Biwa in Otsu, Japan. Interns will serve as greeters, perform food-service duties, and share American language and culture with tourists and school children who ride the boat. The course also will include research, writing, and language study related to Japanese culture and society.
- An additional college course that counts toward your LCC completion or transfer.
